The field of microelectronics has had a profound impact on both the scientific world and on our personal lives. Through astonishing advances in performance, microprocessors have replaced traditional mainframes and supercomputers with microprocessor-based workstations and servers. The remarkable decrease in cost vs. performance for microprocessors has made computing ubiquitous, putting web-connected personal computers in a majority of businesses and homes, and putting microcontrollers in automobiles, appliances and entertainment systems. An accompanying increase in power efficiency has facilitated the development of wireless communications and portable computers. This progress has been driven largely by the scaling of minimum dimensions and voltages, and by the concurrent increase in integration levels of CMOS technology.
